I have been United State for 1 month, I find some different between my expect and the reality, let me talk about the differences.
Food
In my view, American people always eat steak as major food, but in the university dining hall, there is potato, turkey, chicken and burgers everyday. if someday there is beef, that could be a big news! Chinese people likes pork, sometimes we can get the pork at dining hall, but it really sucks. I think almost American foods are "fast food", and people did not wish to spend longer time to prepare and enjoy a dinner. Chinese people treat the supper as a important thing of daily life, household will spend about 3hours to prepare for the supper.
Wear
Hollywood film is a major way for Chinese people to know the U.S. So we always think Americans are fashion guys. But I find Americans are freestyle, and always tee and jeans. Actually I have not saw a people wearing suit expect the professors.
Driving
In Hollywood film, the driver always drive in a rude way, but I find drivers here are polite. And they do not use the horn at all.
Hi DK,

I was without a car for one semester at the University of Delaware as a freshman, and can't even imagine what my life would be like right now without the ability to drive one. As for your view of drivers here being polite...I'll warn you that keeping that point of view intact will be a bit difficult if you plan on driving anywhere outside of Kutztown...hahaha.
Your perspectives on our society are very intriguing to me. Your view of dinner time and our propensity towards fast food in this country is right on. I've worked in restaurants for years, and although they weren't considered to be fast food, far more families go out than did in the past. We had dinner at home all the time when I was growing up, and it's just getting harder and harder to do as I get older. It's encouraging that your culture still places importance on the aspect of family, preparation, and enjoyment when it comes to something as simple as preparing dinner. It gives me hope that I can have that kind of experience with the family that I create someday.
I think that in the US, the formal dinner time has gone away as not much value is placed on it. Now I'm not saying this doesn't exist or that it is not an important value in some families, I just feel that the overall view of this set dinner time has gone away due to everyone being 'so busy'.

Congrats on getting your permit. I still remember how nervous I was trying to get mine. I agree that Americans do seem to rush through meals. Even if we do cook at home and make a home made meal, it is something that can me prepared and eaten in about a half hour. I think some of this is because a lot of households have both adults working outside the home. I get home from work around 5:30pm. My daughter goes to bed by 7:30pm. I have 2 hours to make dinner, eat, clean up and play with her before bedtime. That's not much time to accomplish all that. How do you have time to spend 3 hours on preparing for a meal? I think families should spend quality time together and mealtime is the perfect opportunity for that, but 3 hours? How is that possible?
